Energy is generated through the radioactive decay of nickel-63
US nuclear-materials company NRD LLC has unveiled the NBV solid-state battery, describing it as a power source that can operate for more than 100 years without recharging or maintenance. The device is intended for ultra-low-power electronics installed in remote locations that are difficult or hazardous to service.
In the NBV, energy comes from the radioactive decay of nickel-63 and is then converted into electric current. NRD stresses that the battery has a fully sealed solid-state design, making it suitable for applications in which replacing conventional batteries is virtually impossible.
NBV solid-state battery power output and uses
According to NRD, the NBV delivers between 5 and 500 nanowatts. Measuring 20 × 20 × 12 mm, it falls into the category of power sources for extremely low-power systems. It could be used in sensors, data loggers, monitoring systems, industrial telemetry, environmental sensors and other equipment requiring a continuous yet minimal supply of energy.
The company also says the battery may be useful in autonomous AI platforms, security systems and remote infrastructure-monitoring sites. However, NRD has not yet provided details on the timing of a commercial launch or large-scale production.
Nickel-63 lifespan and the comparable Betavolt battery
The claimed operating life is based on the half-life of nickel-63, although real-world performance will depend on the design efficiency, protective shielding and the way it is integrated into specific devices.
Notably, Chinese company Betavolt Technology introduced a similarly sized nickel-63 battery in 2024, which is likewise designed to operate for around 100 years.
