Vertical garment steamers are becoming increasingly common in everyday clothing care. Lightweight, quick and convenient, they work effectively on a range of fabrics. But could they eventually send traditional irons into retirement?
Vertical garment steamers for everyday clothes care
No ironing board, no elaborate set-up and barely any waiting time. Vertical garment steamers, also known as steamers, have become a handy way to smooth clothes while they remain on hangers, particularly when you need to leave the house quickly and restore a garment’s smart appearance.
According to Beatriz Perez Martín-Peñasco, Senior Customer Marketing Manager for Philips Domestic Appliances in Spain and Portugal, they are "extremely effective on a wide range of everyday fabrics", from delicate materials such as silk and synthetics to tougher options including cotton and denim.
Can steamers replace traditional irons?
That promise should, however, be viewed in proportion. A steamer can remove creases, freshen garments and make day-to-day care easier, but it "does not necessarily completely replace a traditional iron". For very stiff shirts, deep creases or more structured finishes, an iron still has the upper hand.
What to consider when buying a vertical garment steamer
When choosing one of these appliances, the key considerations are power, steam output, heat-up time and operating time. Beatriz stresses that "power and steam output are crucial to effectiveness", while fast heating makes the device more useful in a daily routine. For regular home use, it is worth opting for larger water tanks, steady steam and several settings. For travel or occasional use, low weight, a compact design and speed matter more.
Maintenance also has a bearing on how long the appliance lasts. Since "mineral build-up can affect steam output and efficiency", it is advisable to empty the tank after every use, avoid leaving water standing in it and, where possible, use water with a low limescale content.
Practical, fast and simple to operate, a vertical garment steamer may not remove every crease. Even so, it makes everyday clothes care more straightforward.
