How to Clean a Cooker Hood Filter Without Scrubbing Hard

Person rinsing a metal kitchen strainer under a modern sink in a bright, clean kitchen.

A cooker hood may look unobtrusive above the hob, yet it collects sticky grease whenever it draws in steam, smoke and frying odours. If cleaning is put off, the filter becomes less effective and the kitchen atmosphere feels heavier.

Why does a cooker hood collect so much grease?

When food is fried or sautéed, grease particles rise with the steam and become trapped in the metal filter, around the edges and on the exterior. Over time, this build-up turns into a sticky crust, restricting the flow of hot air.

The issue becomes worse when the cooker hood is used every day but is rarely taken apart. Old grease is harder to lift away, needs a longer soaking time and can leave a persistent odour in an enclosed domestic environment.

Before you begin, check the most critical areas:

  • Filter: holds most of the grease drawn in by the appliance.
  • Frying: speeds up sticky build-up on metal components.
  • Air: dirt reduces circulation and performance.
  • Power: switch off the appliance before carrying out any cleaning.
  • Risk: accumulated grease raises the danger in heavily used kitchens.

How does the cooker hood filter trap grease and odours?

An extractor fan or cooker hood removes fumes and unpleasant smells by extracting or recirculating cooking vapours. During pre-filtration, air passes through aluminium, which more easily captures significant grease particles.

Some models also contain activated carbon to retain moisture and smaller particles linked to odours, so these filters must be replaced periodically according to use. The washable metal filter, meanwhile, needs regular maintenance to maintain the appliance's efficiency.

How can you clean a metal cooker hood filter without scrubbing hard?

With the appliance switched off and cool, remove the aluminium filter according to the fitting instructions from the manufacturer. Then soak it in hot water with washing-up liquid and bicarbonate of soda, allowing the soak to work on the embedded grease.

Let the mixture work before using the sponge

Hot water softens the oily layer, while washing-up liquid helps release the dirt.

Bicarbonate of soda supports the cleaning process and reduces odours trapped in the metal.

Once it has soaked, wipe the filter with a soft sponge, rinse thoroughly and dry it completely before refitting it. Avoid wire wool, excessive pressure and corrosive products, as they can distort the mesh, stain the aluminium and damage delicate fittings.

Clean it in this order:

  • switch off the cooker hood and wait for it to cool down;
  • carefully remove the metal filter;
  • leave it to soak in hot water, washing-up liquid and bicarbonate of soda;
  • rinse, dry thoroughly and refit it only once dry.

How often should a cooker hood be cleaned?

Anyone who cooks daily, fries food or uses plenty of fat should clean the filter every fortnight. In lightly used kitchens, the interval may be longer, but visible oil build-up calls for immediate cleaning.

The exterior also requires a damp cloth with mild washing-up liquid, kept away from buttons, the motor and sockets. Never pour water directly onto the appliance, because the electrical area requires care, drying and safety checks before it is switched back on.

Use these guidelines to keep up the routine:

  • clean fortnightly if you cook frequently;
  • clean immediately if grease is running off;
  • use a lightly damp cloth on the exterior without soaking it;
  • replace the carbon filter when the model requires it.

Why does keeping the cooker hood clean improve the kitchen?

Just as cleaning built-up grease from the hob with bicarbonate of soda prevents grime from setting and spreading, looking after the cooker hood does the same. The result is a lighter kitchen, with less odour after everyday meals.

A grease-clogged filter makes the appliance work harder, reduces vapour capture and increases risks when intense heat is close to the hob. With regular maintenance, the cooker hood performs better, lasts longer and keeps the air cleaner with daily household safety.
