Across Europe and North America, more home gardeners are reconsidering what should be thrown in the bin. A particularly unexpected feature of this low-tech movement is the ordinary toilet roll cardboard tube, which is being reused as a small plant guard, seedling pot and soil improver.

Why an empty toilet roll matters in the garden

A cardboard tube may seem like worthless packaging at first, but it behaves quite differently once placed in soil. Its fibres retain water, protect delicate roots and gradually nourish the ground as they decompose. For gardeners dealing with heat, slugs or compacted beds, this can mean the difference between a disappointing season and a worthwhile crop.

Cardboard tubes act like tiny biodegradable plant collars: they guide water, soften temperature swings and disappear into the soil.

Cardboard consists mainly of cellulose, a plant-derived material that works much like a sponge. It takes up water from rainfall or a watering can before slowly giving it back as the soil dries. This steady process helps maintain a more consistent root zone than exposed soil, particularly in shallow beds, containers and balcony planters.

Soil life also regards the tube as a food source. Fungi and bacteria begin to break down its fibres from the outer surface, while earthworms pull pieces further underground and combine them with minerals and organic material. Rather than using extra plastic pots or synthetic coverings, gardeners gain a modest amount of added humus and a more open top layer of soil.

The tube’s simple circular form has practical benefits too. It provides some protection from wind at soil level, reduces evaporation from the surface and forms a narrow channel that directs water down towards the stem instead of allowing it to flow across the bed.

Starting seeds without plastic pots

Small growers across the UK, US and Germany are increasingly arranging these tubes in trays or reused food cartons, then filling them with seed compost. Keeping the tubes tightly grouped helps them remain upright while the compost settles and seedlings emerge.

  • Slice each tube into two or three smaller cylinders.
  • Arrange them closely in a shallow tray or a halved milk carton.
  • Add a light, peat-free compost mixture.
  • Sow one or two seeds in each tube, then cover them lightly.
  • Water carefully, preferably from underneath so that the compost is not washed away.

Once seedlings have developed four to six true leaves, plant the whole compost plug into the garden or a larger pot, cardboard tube included. As the cardboard becomes damp, roots gradually grow through it, helping to prevent the transplant shock that can happen when seedlings are removed from plastic modules.

A further growing use is as an inexpensive protective barrier around vulnerable stems.   • form a light layer that deters some weeds;

Not all bathroom packaging is suitable for the soil. Gardening experts recommend using plain, uncoated cardboard only. Printed or glossy tubes can contain inks, adhesives or thin plastic coatings that decompose slowly or could introduce unwanted chemicals into beds used for growing food.

Public allotments from Manchester to Milwaukee are reporting increased interest in “no-dig” and regenerative methods, which focus on feeding the soil rather than simply feeding plants. Cardboard, including tubes, fits naturally within this approach as a straightforward carbon source that can work on a small scale in raised beds and containers.

Environmental groups identify another benefit: reduced use of single-use plastics. Seed trays and cell packs can be difficult to recycle once they are dirty or cracked. Biodegradable pots are available, but their cost can be hard to justify for many renters and community gardeners. Toilet tubes, meanwhile, appear in almost every household each week and would usually be discarded.

Risks, limitations and when cardboard tubes are not enough

Gardeners should not treat tubes as a miracle solution. In particularly wet climates or badly drained clay soils, added cellulose around a stem may keep the plant base overly damp. This can encourage slugs, mould and rot. In such gardens, tubes are better used as seed pots for raised beds or containers rather than planted into heavy soil.

Scale is another limitation. A few dozen tubes can serve a small urban garden or balcony, but a market gardener raising thousands of seedlings is unlikely to produce enough household waste for the task and may instead opt for commercially made biodegradable trays.

Those with chemical sensitivities may prefer not to use any printed cardboard near edible plants, even if the inks are described as plant-based. For these gardeners, only plain tubes without labels belong in the vegetable bed, while other cardboard can be kept for ornamental borders or mulching paths.

Practical ways to test the method at home

Gardeners who want to try the technique can carry out a basic two-row comparison. Start equal quantities of tomatoes, beans or marigolds. Grow half in cardboard tubes and the remainder in standard plastic cells or open seed trays. Plant them out on the same day, provide the same amount of water and record:

  • how many seedlings survive being transplanted;
  • how rapidly they establish roots and produce fresh growth;
  • whether either group suffers more losses from wind or slugs.

Even a simple notebook kept for six to eight weeks can reveal whether tubes improve survival in your own conditions. Soils and climates react differently, meaning a small trial at home often provides more useful information than broad advice in books or on social media.

Parents and teachers are also using tube planting as an affordable classroom project. Children can colour the exterior with pencils, write their name on each tube and observe roots appearing when the compost plug is carefully lifted. Seeing the relationship between stems, roots and soil directly can leave a stronger impression than a science worksheet.

For gardeners who already put coffee grounds, eggshells or kitchen scraps on their beds, cardboard tubes suit the same approach. They provide structure, offer seedlings a better chance of success and cut waste without requiring new purchases or complicated methods. When a bathroom roll is empty, many gardeners now ask one straightforward question: bin, or bed?
