When to Run Your Washing Machine to Reduce Your Electricity Bill

If you want to make a substantial cut to your electricity bill, using your washing machine more strategically can help. Here is the best time to start a wash and achieve worthwhile savings.

At a time when using less energy is no longer simply an option but a necessity, every household should reassess its electricity-use habits. Among domestic appliances, the washing machine accounts for a meaningful share, representing around 6% of the electricity consumed by an average household (according to EDF). Understanding how to use it more efficiently is therefore essential for lowering both your bill and your environmental footprint.

When should you definitely not run your washing machine?

The first step towards more responsible consumption is to identify peak-demand periods. Electricity demand reaches its highest point between 6 pm and 10 pm, which results in higher energy costs.

For many electricity suppliers, this period often matches the “peak hours” tariff. By avoiding washing-machine use at these times, you can save money while also helping to reduce pressure on the electricity network.

The best times to run a washing machine

The alternative is to use off-peak hours, usually from 10 pm to 6 am, depending on your electricity contract. Electricity use is lower during this window, so reduced rates may apply. Setting your washing machine to run then lets you take advantage of a lower cost per kWh, bringing down your bill.
