Dell unveils future-ready peripherals

Dell has introduced the Pro 7 wireless set (catalogue number KM746), comprising a mouse and keyboard that dispense with conventional rechargeable cells and disposable batteries. The devices use supercapacitors instead, enabling the peripherals to be recharged in seconds. According to the company, a five-second charge provides roughly one day of use, while five minutes delivers up to one and a half months of battery life for the mouse and up to three months for the keyboard.

Supercapacitors’ key benefit is their exceptionally rapid charging and their near-total resistance to degradation over time. Compared with lithium-ion batteries, they are less susceptible to wear and do not need periodic replacement like disposable batteries. They are also regarded as safer in terms of fire risk.

Pro 7 availability and supercapacitor research

Dell has not yet announced the price of the Pro 7, but said that US sales will begin on 16 April. CNews notes that interest in supercapacitors has also been growing in Russia in recent years, where new materials and components for these energy-storage systems are being developed. Russian researchers have previously suggested using unusual raw materials in supercapacitor production, including hogweed stems.
