Workout clothes can easily hold on to the smell of sweat, even after being washed. This is because performance fabrics trap traces of bacteria, deodorant and natural skin oils. As a result, many people look for straightforward, affordable ways to keep sportswear clean, soft and free from unpleasant odours without affecting the material’s stretch. White distilled vinegar can be a useful household option.

How to wash workout clothes with vinegar: step by step

Before using any product, first separate gym clothing from other laundry, especially towels and heavy cotton items. Then turn sportswear inside out, as sweat and deodorant are more concentrated on the inner side and can be harder to remove there.

White distilled vinegar is generally the most suitable type for this wash, provided that it is properly diluted. The following simple method can help loosen residues that detergent alone does not always remove, while retaining the fabric’s feel and elasticity.

  1. Fill a bucket or washing-up bowl with cold or slightly cool water.
  2. Add ½ to 1 cup (120 to 240 ml) of white vinegar for every 4 to 5 litres of water.
  3. Stir the solution thoroughly, then add the workout clothes after turning them inside out.
  4. Leave them to soak for 20 to 40 minutes, never exceeding 1 hour.
  5. Once soaked, wash as usual with a laundry detergent, preferably on a delicate cycle.

How does vinegar remove the smell of sweat from clothes?

White distilled vinegar has mild acidity, which helps neutralise odours created by bacteria in dried sweat. When workout clothing soaks in a vinegar-and-water solution, the particles responsible for bad smells generally loosen more easily during washing, without the need for very hot water.

To enhance this result and stop odours from returning quickly, a few laundry habits can make a noticeable difference and keep the fabric fresher for longer.

  • Wash as soon as possible: leaving sweaty clothing in a gym bag or laundry basket for several days allows the smell to become more deeply embedded.
  • Do not use too much detergent: excess detergent can remain trapped in the fibres and contribute to unpleasant odours.
  • Avoid very hot water: with gym fabrics, high temperatures can “cook” the smell into the material.
  • Dry in a well-ventilated place: hanging items in the shade in an airy area helps disperse any remaining odours.

Does vinegar soften fabric without damaging its elasticity?

The product can help make fibres feel more flexible, particularly where conventional fabric softener or detergent has built up. By dissolving these remnants, the material tends to feel less stiff, which can be beneficial for frequently worn leggings, sports bras and dry-fit T-shirts.

Clothing made with elastane, polyamide and other performance fibres needs careful treatment so that its structure is not compromised. Using diluted white distilled vinegar in cold or slightly cool water, while observing the soaking time, helps prevent damage and keeps elasticity in good condition.

How often should vinegar be used on workout clothes?

There is no need to add vinegar to every wash, except where the odour is particularly strong and repeatedly returns. For people who exercise often, using it in one wash per week is usually enough to maintain freshness, provided the clothes are dried somewhere with good airflow.

Vinegar can also be used only when an odour remains after an ordinary wash, alternating it with products formulated specifically for sportswear. This helps the fabric retain a good appearance, remain free from a strong smell and preserve its durability over time.
