Many households will recognise the same scene: white marks, dull glass, an ever-growing collection of sprays from the supermarket – yet the shower screen still looks greyed over. A simple DIY solution is now circulating on social media for exactly this issue: a homemade gel cleaner made from three ingredients that most people already keep in their kitchen cupboard.
Why shower glass turns cloudy so quickly
Anyone living in a hard-water area will eventually notice it in their shower. As you wash, minerals dissolved in the warm water, including calcium and magnesium carbonates, settle on the glass. Once the water dries, it leaves behind the familiar white spots and a dull film.
Over time, this layer gradually becomes a proper crust. More soap, shampoo and shower gel then cling to it. Eventually, the glass does not merely look cloudy but genuinely worn: tiny specks, yellowish patches and a texture that no longer feels smooth.

Liquid cleaners quickly run down vertical surfaces. This is precisely where the gel concept helps: the thickened cleaner adheres to the shower screen, stays on the problem areas and can work there undisturbed.

This homemade anti-limescale gel cleaner requires just three items:
- Clear household vinegar (around 8% acidity) – dissolves mineral deposits
- Citric acid (powder) – boosts the effect and targets limescale deposits
- Cornflour – creates the gel-like consistency
Vinegar and citric acid are regarded as so-called weak acids for household use. While they are not harmless in concentrated form, they are considerably less aggressive than many commercial products containing strong acids or chlorine. The cornflour turns the mixture into a gel that performs like an expensive specialist cleaner – but at a much lower cost.
How to make the anti-limescale gel cleaner
Preparation is almost like a brief cooking process and takes around ten minutes:
- Have a glass jar or heat-resistant measuring jug ready.
- Stir one tablespoon of cornflour into 300 ml of cold water until no lumps remain.
- Transfer the mixture to a small saucepan and warm it over a low heat, stirring continuously, until it thickens into a slightly viscous, translucent gel.
- Take the saucepan off the heat and allow it to cool briefly.
- Stir in one tablespoon of citric acid.
- Add around 100 ml of clear household vinegar and mix thoroughly.
- Leave it to cool, then pour it into an empty, clean bottle or an old dispenser.

Correct application: how to make the shower screen clear again
To make the most of the gel, the order of the steps matters. Taking a few minutes over the job will usually produce a visible before-and-after result.
Step 1: Remove surface dirt
First, rinse the glass briefly with warm water. Shampoo, soap and dust residues should be removed so that the gel sits directly on the limescale. A soft cloth is enough at this stage – do not use a brush.
Step 2: Apply the gel
Put on gloves. Use a spoon, brush or the bottle itself to apply the gel to dry or only slightly damp glass. Cover heavily affected areas generously, particularly those in the spray zone of the shower head.
Important: do not rub vigorously; instead, “lay” the gel on as a coating. It should cling to the surface rather than immediately slide downwards.
Step 3: Make use of the contact time
Leave the gel to work for between 15 and 30 minutes, depending on how heavy the deposits are. For particularly stubborn crusts, an hour can also be worthwhile.

What to consider for different shower-screen materials
Not every shower screen is made from standard safety glass. Depending on the material, a few adjustments may be sensible.
- Standard glass: Generally unproblematic. The gel can usually be used undiluted.
- Coated glass with anti-limescale protection: Test it on an inconspicuous corner first and dilute with a little water if necessary. Follow the manufacturer's instructions.
- Plastic or acrylic: The surface is more sensitive. Make the gel runnier and use soft cloths.
- Tile grout: It can be used briefly, but do not leave it on for too long so that the grout is not affected.
- Stone such as marble or granite: Do not use acids, as they can dull the surface.
How to keep the shower screen permanently clear
Once the demanding initial clean is complete, two simple habits can save a great deal of work.
Everyday routine
After showering, use a squeegee to remove water from the glass and tiles. This rarely takes more than a minute but significantly reduces the amount of limescale. A quick wipe with a microfibre cloth is another option.
You can then schedule a gel “treatment” every few weeks. In areas with very hard water, once a month is perfectly reasonable; where water is soft, a longer interval is sufficient.

Common mistakes that make shower glass look older than necessary over the long term include:
- Abrasive cream cleaner on glass
- Scouring pads or the rough side of a washing-up sponge
- Cleaning only “when it gets really bad”, rather than following a regular care routine

Combining different cleaning agents in particular can create toxic fumes. Always use only one cleaner at a time and ventilate the room thoroughly afterwards.
How limescale, vinegar and citric acid work together
This household trick is based on simple chemistry. Limescale consists mainly of calcium carbonate. When it comes into contact with acid, soluble salts, water and carbon dioxide are formed. This applies to both vinegar and citric acid.
Citric acid has the advantage of being a crystalline powder with a long shelf life that can be measured out easily. Vinegar also brings a clearly recognisable “cleaning” scent that many associate with cleanliness – even if not everyone likes the smell.
When a DIY gel reaches its limits
If glass has been neglected for years, deposits may have penetrated the surface so deeply that even acid gels cannot remove them completely. The glass may then appear etched rather than simply affected by limescale.
In these cases, the method will often at least reduce the worst of the haze. However, it will not become 100% clear again.
