Why should hydrogen peroxide not be used on every material?

Coloured textiles, wood, leather, metals and natural stone all need particular care. Hydrogen peroxide may break down dyes, dry out fibres, stain aluminium, copper and steel, and damage sealants used on marble, granite and quartzite.

It should also not be applied to television, mobile phone, laptop or monitor screens. Liquid can seep into gaps, harm anti-reflective layers and leave permanent marks on the display surface.

Which combinations are useful and which mixtures are hazardous?

For straightforward cleaning, hydrogen peroxide can be used alone on suitable surfaces or after an initial wash with water and mild washing-up liquid. Remove visible dirt first, apply it briefly, and rinse where the material allows.

  • Hydrogen peroxide with mild washing-up liquid may help with light stains, provided the mixture is used immediately and thoroughly removed.
  • Hydrogen peroxide with bicarbonate of soda creates a paste that can be useful on pale grout and durable areas.
  • Never combine hydrogen peroxide with vinegar, as this can create peracetic acid, which irritates the skin, eyes and respiratory tract.
  • Never mix it with chlorine bleach, ammonia or strong disinfectants.
  • Do not heat the mixture or store homemade solutions in sealed containers for future use.

How can you use hydrogen peroxide safely without damaging your home?

The safest approach is to use a small amount, wear gloves, keep the room ventilated and follow the recommended contact time. The CDC recognises 3% hydrogen peroxide as a stable disinfectant for non-living surfaces, but product selection must take account of material compatibility, safety and prior removal of dirt.

In everyday household cleaning, hydrogen peroxide should be regarded as a targeted option for whitening and sanitising particular surfaces, rather than an all-purpose product. If there is any uncertainty about fabric, stone, metal, wood or electronics, use mild washing-up liquid, a soft cloth and a product intended for that finish instead.
