Keep mosquitoes away with toilet paper and essential oils

A remarkably effective method.

Every year, the same thing happens. However much we expect them, mosquitoes inevitably disturb our sleep and disrupt the peace of our days. Beyond this summer nuisance, they are increasingly capable of transmitting diseases, so it is important to avoid them as much as possible.

Toilet paper and essential oils to repel mosquitoes

A surprising technique has recently been widely shared on social media. As Pure People reports, internet users soak toilet paper in essential oils in an attempt to drive mosquitoes away. Citronella is especially popular, along with lavender and lemon eucalyptus. At the very least, this approach can keep them away from the immediate area.

These oils are often inexpensive to buy, as is the toilet paper most people already have at home. However, their effectiveness is not guaranteed 100%, as it depends on the mosquito species. The size of the room and the concentration of oil must also be considered.

Combining mosquito-repellent measures

Several methods should therefore be used together, including removing standing water in and around the home and/or fitting mosquito nets. Essential oils must also be handled carefully: they are unsuitable for young children, pregnant women and certain sensitive individuals.

A revolutionary repellent

As a reminder, we recently told you about a research team that developed an innovative repellent using bacteria naturally found on human skin to provide long-lasting protection against mosquito bites. The findings of their work were published in the journal PNAS Nexus.

This innovation is based on an in-depth understanding of the mechanisms that attract female mosquitoes. They are particularly responsive to a range of signals, including body heat, exhaled carbon dioxide and the odours produced by the human skin microbiome.
