Months old, already grey and somehow musty: many dish towels are thrown away far too soon – even though one simple trick is often enough.
Anyone who cooks frequently will recognise the issue: dish towels that were bright white only recently soon become grey, stained and stiff. The usual response is to buy replacements or reach for harsh chemicals. Yet a straightforward blend of household staples can restore their original whiteness remarkably well, without using chlorine cleaner.
Why dish towels become grey and unattractive so quickly
Dish towels are the kitchen’s real workhorses. They absorb grease, sauces, tea and coffee residue, red wine, and anything else that gets spilled while cooking. That is precisely why they lose their brightness so rapidly.
- Fats and oils work their way deep into the fibres.
- Colour pigments from coffee, tea, tomato sauce or red wine can permanently stain the fabric.

How bicarbonate works on fabric
Bicarbonate is mildly alkaline, helping to break down grease and neutralise odours. Once distributed through the fabric, it loosens dried-on food residue and pigments that discolour the towels. Unlike many harsh cleaning products, it does not attack the fibres; instead, it acts more like a gentle “loosener” in the background.
At the same time, it helps prevent unpleasant smells from lingering in the material. Typical cooking odours, old grease and musty notes noticeably fade away.
Why vinegar is the ideal partner
