Hydrogen Peroxide, Bicarbonate of Soda and Mild Washing-up Liquid Paste: How to Treat Stains

A paste made with hydrogen peroxide, bicarbonate of soda and mild washing-up liquid is chiefly used to tackle yellowing and concentrated stains on white or pale garments. Hydrogen peroxide can oxidise pigments, bicarbonate of soda provides mild abrasion, and washing-up liquid lifts grease from the fibres. Results, however, vary according to the fabric, the source of the stain and how long it has been there.

What does each ingredient do when cleaning fabric?

Low-strength hydrogen peroxide works as a chlorine-free bleaching agent, helping to lighten certain organic residues. Bicarbonate of soda is a mildly alkaline powder that can loosen dirt and lessen odours, while mild washing-up liquid contains agents that surround grease so it can be removed more easily during rinsing.

These complementary roles are why the mixture may be more effective than using each ingredient on its own. Even so, the paste will not restore every old stain, particularly if the item has been through a tumble dryer or ironed several times, as heat may set some residues into the fibres.

How should the paste be made and applied to stains?

The most widely shared ratio is two tablespoons of 3% hydrogen peroxide, one tablespoon of bicarbonate of soda and one tablespoon of mild washing-up liquid. Mix the ingredients only when you are ready to use them, creating a cream that stays on the stained area rather than running off.

  • Check the care instructions on the garment label first;
  • Test the mixture on a seam or an inside section of the item;
  • Spread a thin layer straight onto the stain;
  • Work it in gently with a soft-bristled brush;
  • Leave it to work for around 15 to 20 minutes;
  • Rinse thoroughly, then wash the item as usual.

Which garments are most commonly treated with the hydrogen peroxide paste?

The stain-removing paste is most often used on durable white fabrics, including cotton and certain cotton-polyester blends. It is commonly applied to T-shirts with underarm yellowing, grimy collars, towels, bed sheets, socks, light-coloured uniforms and tea towels carrying greasy residues.

On coloured garments, peroxide may affect the dye and leave an area lighter than the rest of the item. Delicate fabrics such as wool and silk, as well as leather, suede, embroidery, prints and glued embellishments, should not be treated with the mixture without specific washing guidance.

What precautions help prevent fading and fabric damage?

Using too much product, leaving it in contact for too long or scrubbing harshly can weaken fibres or create a pale mark. To minimise this risk, apply the mixture only to the affected area and never store it pre-mixed in a sealed container:

  • Use only low-strength hydrogen peroxide, usually 10-volume;
  • Do not apply it to the entire garment without carrying out a patch test first;
  • Do not allow the paste to dry completely on the fabric;
  • Avoid hot water until you have confirmed the stain has gone;
  • Do not combine the recipe with chlorine, ammonia or other cleaners;
  • Stop using it if fading or a change in texture occurs.

Why has the mixture become so popular for washing at home?

Its popularity is linked to the low cost of the ingredients and the paste-like consistency, which concentrates treatment on collars, underarms and small stains. The combination also brings together whitening, grease removal and mechanical action in one step before a conventional wash.

This mixture for restoring stained clothes works best on strong white items when used briefly and rinsed thoroughly. For coloured or delicate fabrics, the hidden patch test remains the crucial step in preventing a cleaning attempt from ending in colour loss.
