Baked-on grease on stove tiles becomes increasingly difficult to remove as fresh layers of oil, dust and heat build up. When dealing with this long-standing grime, a quick wipe with alcohol or washing-up liquid can demand considerable scrubbing. The most effective approach usually starts by softening the coating with heat or steam, then lifting it away with a suitable cleaner and a non-abrasive cloth or sponge.
Why is old grease so hard to remove?
Fresh oil splashes can generally be wiped away without much difficulty because they are still relatively fluid. After repeated heating and cooling cycles behind the cooker, however, the residue spreads into a sticky film that traps other particles and bonds more firmly to the surface.
Washing-up liquid is not ineffective in this process. Its surfactants help loosen and emulsify grease so that it can be carried away by water. The issue is expecting a quick application of cold washing-up liquid to instantly dissolve a layer that has built up over weeks or months. Hot water and sufficient contact time help release greasy dirt before scrubbing begins.

Cleaning guidance also recommends bicarbonate of soda paste for stubborn grime, followed by rinsing with water.
Enzymatic degreasers work differently: certain enzymes help break down fats and organic residue over time. In this case, extra heat does not necessarily produce better results, as the product needs to remain in place for the period and at the temperature specified on its label. It is best to choose a formula clearly suitable for tile and grout rather than adapting products intended for floors or drains.
