How to Clean a Shower Head with Vinegar: Delta’s Method

Minerals left behind as water repeatedly evaporates can collect around the tiny outlets in a shower head. This build-up may block the holes, disrupt the spray pattern and reduce water flow in certain areas.

Why can minerals affect the shower head spray?

The issue is often more noticeable in areas where the water contains higher levels of particular minerals. Cleaning the shower head at regular intervals can therefore be easier than waiting until the outlets become fully clogged.

Why does a vinegar and water mixture work?

Distilled white vinegar contains acetic acid, which can help break down mineral deposits. Delta therefore recommends an equal-parts solution of distilled white vinegar and water to remove this type of build-up without using harsher cleaning products.

For shower heads with more stubborn deposits, the manufacturer advises removing the component and soaking it before gently cleaning it with a soft cloth or toothbrush. The process can be repeated if residue remains.

How to clean a shower head with vinegar

Where the model allows it, remove the shower head from the shower arm and place it in a container filled with 50% distilled white vinegar and 50% water. According to Delta’s guidance, a 30-minute soak is enough to begin loosening mineral deposits.

Next, carefully rub the surface and the small outlets using a soft cloth or toothbrush. Rinse it thoroughly with water, then refit the component. On models with rubber cleaning outlets, including some Touch-Clean systems, the manufacturer advises first trying to clear deposits with your fingers, without soaking.

Who should take care with this method?

Before soaking any shower head, check the manufacturer’s specific instructions, particularly for models with distinctive finishes or components. Delta also recommends avoiding abrasive products and certain chemical agents that could damage the finish.

There is also no need to dismantle parts that were not designed to be removed. If the shower head still produces an uneven flow after cleaning, there may be internal residue or another issue requiring a specific assessment. In this case, cleaning a shower head with vinegar can be a straightforward option for mineral deposits, provided the method is suitable for the model.
