Baking Soda in the Washing Machine: How to Use It

Putting baking soda in the washing machine can be useful primarily for managing odours and supporting the wash of certain garments. Manufacturers including Maytag and Whirlpool generally regard it as safe for most machines, although they advise checking the appliance manual. They also state that it should be added straight to the drum rather than necessarily to the detergent drawer.

Why can baking soda help during a wash?

Baking soda is a mildly alkaline compound that may help neutralise odours while supporting the washing process. Maytag mentions its use in tackling smells caused by sweat, smoke and other lingering odours in clothes.

It may also assist in balancing the water's pH and, under certain conditions, lessen the impact of hard water on fabrics. This does not mean it can replace detergent, but it can serve as a washing aid.

Where should baking soda go in the washing machine?

This is one of the key considerations. Guidance from Maytag and Whirlpool recommends adding baking soda directly to the washing machine drum with the laundry, rather than pouring it into the detergent dispenser. Powder can build up in the drawer and may contribute to a blockage.

The amount should not be viewed as a universal recommendation for every appliance either. Maytag refers to using up to around half a cup for one load, but advises consulting the manual for the specific model before using the product. Care labels should also be checked, particularly for delicate fabrics.

Can baking soda be used to remove odours from clothes?

Yes. This is among the most well-established uses in the manufacturers' guidance reviewed. Baking soda can help neutralise odours from sweat, smoke and other persistent smells.

For items that still smell after washing, Whirlpool also describes using a paste of baking soda and water as a targeted pre-treatment. The garment should then be washed in accordance with its care-label instructions.

Does it really clean the washing machine and extend its lifespan?

This claim requires some caution. Baking soda can be used to help control odours in the washing machine itself, and manufacturers acknowledge this possible use. However, an occasional application does not mean it can thoroughly clean every internal component or guarantee a longer lifespan for the appliance.

Maintaining a washing machine involves further steps, including cleaning the dispenser, looking after the seal and running the cleaning cycle recommended for the model. Baking soda can therefore be a useful aid for odours and washing, but it should not replace the cleaning programme or products specified by the manufacturer. It is also best to avoid mixing it with vinegar inside the machine: the combination weakens the chemical action of both, while vinegar may be unsuitable for certain washing machine components.
