Want to cut your electricity bill substantially by managing your washing machine use more wisely? Here is the best time to run a washing machine and make worthwhile savings.

At a time when using energy more sparingly is no longer optional but essential, every household should reassess its electricity habits. Among domestic appliances, the washing machine accounts for a significant share, representing around 6% of the electricity used by an average household (according to EDF). Understanding how to use it more efficiently is therefore vital to lower both your bill and your environmental footprint.

When should you definitely not run your washing machine?

The first step towards more responsible consumption is to be aware of peak times. Electricity demand is at its highest between 6 pm and 10 pm, resulting in higher energy costs.

This period often corresponds to the ‘peak-rate’ tariff offered by many electricity suppliers. By avoiding use of your washing machine during these hours, you can save money while also helping to reduce pressure on the electricity grid.

The alternative is to use off-peak hours, usually between 10 pm and 6 am, depending on your electricity contract. Electricity use is lower during this period, so reduced rates may apply. Setting your washing machine to run then lets you benefit from a lower cost per kWh, thereby cutting your bill. If you have an EDF Tempo tariff, using the washing machine during off-peak hours is even more worthwhile, except on red days.

It also helps to balance energy demand across the grid more effectively, which is a meaningful step for the environment.

Choose eco mode

To increase your savings, most modern washing machines feature an eco mode. This setting washes at temperatures below 40°C, greatly reducing the amount of hot water used and therefore energy consumption. When your clothes are not especially dirty, it is the most worthwhile option for washing efficiently while spending less. It is also gentler on fabrics.

Remember to maintain your washing machine regularly as well. Clean filters and seals ensure it operates at maximum efficiency, helping to prevent unnecessary water and electricity consumption.
