Applying bar soap to wooden drawer runners leaves a dry coating that improves glide and helps prevent sticking. This method is especially useful for older chests of drawers and cupboards, where the drawer wood slides directly against another wooden surface rather than using metal runners.
Why do wooden drawers start to stick?
Wood takes in and releases moisture according to the conditions in the room. During damp periods, its fibres may swell, increasing the pressure between the drawer, the furniture sides and the runners. Built-up dust, minor distortion and rough surfaces can make the drawer even harder to move.
The issue is caused by friction between two solid surfaces that touch each other. The greater the resistance between the parts, the more force is needed to open or close the drawer. The most common signs include:
- A drawer that catches at the same point every time;
- A harsh scraping sound when it is opened;
- Wear marks along the sides or runner;
- Poorer operation on damp days;
- Having to pull the drawer with excessive force.
What does rubbing dry soap on runners do?
Soap leaves a solid, slippery layer on the contact points. This coating fills some of the tiny uneven areas in the wood and reduces resistance as the drawer moves, so it slides with less effort without soaking the structure.
- It immediately lowers friction between the components;
- It makes old drawers easier to open;
- It avoids using liquids on unfinished wood;
- It creates less mess than oily lubricants;
- It can be reapplied once the effect wears off.
How should you apply bar soap to wooden drawer runners?
Take the drawer out completely and locate the areas that slide against the furniture. Remove dust with a dry cloth, then rub a small amount of dry bar soap over the bottom runners, side guides and any spots showing friction marks. There is no need to dampen the soap or build up a thick layer.
Put the drawer back in place and open and close it several times to spread the material. If it still catches at one particular point, remove it again and check for splinters, loose screws, warped wood or an area that has swollen too much. Soap makes the drawer slide more easily, but it cannot repair structural damage.
Why should oils and sprays be avoided on unprotected wood?
Liquid lubricants can soak into the fibres, darken the timber and leave behind a sticky surface that traps dust. For wooden runners, dry soap or a paraffin wax candle will usually leave fewer damp residues. Follow these precautions when applying it:
- Choose a firm soap or bar soap without abrasive particles;
- Do not put washing-up liquid on the runners;
- Keep excess product away from visible edges;
- Do not use this method on telescopic metal runners;
- Remove old layers before applying fresh ones;
- Test it first on a small concealed area.
How can you stop drawers from sticking again?
Wood maintenance begins with managing humidity. Avoid placing furniture against walls affected by damp, do not clean runners with a soaking-wet cloth, and allow some air circulation in the room. Dust, crumbs and other debris should also be cleared away before they build up around the sliding areas.
This approach can form part of the care used to restore wooden furniture without unnecessarily wearing down its surface. However, if the drawer is warped, cracked or misaligned, the piece will need adjusting or a cabinetmaker should be consulted, as further layers of soap would only temporarily conceal the fault.
